The Tares and the Wheat

by Sondra Ball

I met a murderer once,
a bold faced murderer,
seller of drugs,
seller of men's souls,
who threw himself before a speeding car
to save a little girl.

I met a pastor once,
a bold faced pastor,
powerful counselor,
soup kitchen controller,
who raped little girls
until one went crying to her mother.

The weeds and the wheat grow together
among the nations,
inside the nations,
among the people,
inside the people,
and nothing is completely what it seems.
