A Shelf Full of Plants

by Sondra Ball

Beside my computer,
next to the window
that looks out at my sycamore tree,
is a shelf full of plants.
Most of them are cacti,
because only desert plants
survive the periodic droughts
of my forgetfulness.
Sometimes, in December,
one of them blooms,
spilling spring against the snow
on the window ledge,
and into my room.
